Thomas Glover

Thomas Blake Glover

Mention of the name of Thomas Blake Glover to most Japanese and they will tell you it is synonymous with Japanese technology, Mitsubishi and Madam Butterfly.

Japan holds the memory of this Brocher in very high esteem, his former home in Nagasaki being something of a shrine to many Japanese.

Probably more than any other foreigner, Thomas Blake Glover was responsible for bringing an isolated Japanese nation into the industrial and commercial world of the twentieth century.

Commerce Street, Fraserburgh.

He was born here in 1838

The house was demolished as a result of a Luftwaffe air raid in 1941.

It is ironic that Glover’s house in Nagasaki withstood an atomic bomb in 1945.
